Conservation Volunteers Australia
Project in Focus: Curtis Island National Park |
Beautiful Curtis Island, a camper's paradise, forms the outer barrier for Gladstone harbour and is the site of a major nesting beach for the threatened Flatback turtle. Flatback turtles are endemic to the warmer coastal areas of Australia and like other turtle species, its numbers have shown a steady decline. Our lucky team of volunteers will be heading over for a week long camping project to assist Queensland Parks and Wildlife Rangers in foreshore restoration and beach protection in the National Park and newly gazette Conservation Park. November marks the start of the Flatback nesting season and the rangers will be on hand to host Turtle Walks along the beach at night. There are 3 weeks of projects planned - 17th – 22nd November, 24th - 29th November and 15th – 20th December. |
